Background

John Kirkwood

I grew up in Australia and was a high school teacher in Queensland from 1974 to 1983. While in England in 1985, I discovered the healing power of acupressure, and a previously unknown gift for bodywork. I eventually found my way to California, and from 1988 to 1989 I trained in advanced acupressure with Iona Teeguarden and established my own practice in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since then, I have undertaken many further studies, including Anatomy and Physiology, Neo-Reichian Massage, Myofascial Release, and the SOPHIA program of the Traditional Acupuncture Institute of Maryland. Other techniques I've developed include Distance Healing, Direct Healing, and Spiritual Healing.

As a teacher, I have taught acupressure classes both to bodyworkers and lay people. From 1992 to 2000 I was a member of Five Hands Clapping, a group of SOPHIA graduates who created workshops to bring the principles of the Five Elements into daily life. My work as educator continues in the treatment room as I offer tools for self healing to my clients.

My bodywork practice goes hand in hand with my ongoing spiritual practice; each informs the other. I am a member of the Ridhwan School Diamond Approach, a spiritual practice based in ever deepening levels of inquiry into our True Nature. This work, more than any other, has enhanced my awareness, my understanding, and my ability to bring many levels of healing to my clients.
